An elegant and uplifting cultural work-out on Rhodes

Living in the past

The message from Rodos Park is come along and get involved. First off, you need only take a few steps from our door to enter the Medieval City, a world of mystique and stories from times gone by waiting for you to discover. Better still, time your visit with the annual Medieval Rose Festival happening every October, which takes the entire town by the scruff of its neck and whisks it back into the Middle Ages. You can literally live the legend and inhabit the history by playing a full part in all the events, workshops and games. Don a costume, adopt a custom and enjoy the camaraderie; you’ll have fun bantering with court jesters, dancing and singing to music played on instruments of that time, sampling its dishes as well, and generally getting carried away with all the pageantry and passion in the company of high-spirited locals.

Show us your moves

Acclaimed writer Chinua Achebe once likened the world to a dance that you can only see through understanding eyes if “you do not stand in one place.” That’s the spirit here at Rodos Park and on Rhodes; you’re invited up onto your feet to find your rhythm, style and zest for life, and there’s plenty to go round, of that you can be quite sure! Tuesday nights at Il Parco Restaurant mean you are in for the full Latin treatment. Leave your inhibitions at the entrance, and if you’ve never tried it before, you’ll soon find out what you’ve been missing out on!

And there’s more! Come September, having notched up a passable Pasodoble, you can sashay out of Rodos Park and across the island, into artistic venues, historic squares, colourful courtyards and numerous picturesque locations next to the sea. For the first ten days of the month, Rhodes becomes a Dance Laboratory and the guinea pigs are having all the fun! (Rest assured, no animal is harmed throughout the entirety of this event!). With age no barrier, you are encouraged to immerse yourself in a unique experience on the move; joining dancers, choreographers and others from the broad spectrum of the arts in open rehearsals, talks, workshops, and of course, wonderful displays of grace and agility.

Music makes the world go round

Never underestimate the power of music to open your heart. If you don’t take our word for it, you can trust Maria von Trapp, the real-life inspiration for much-loved musical, The Sound of Music. With Tuesday’s Samba vibe already one of your favourite things, take note of the rest of Il Parco’s tuneful timetable for the summer. On Thursday, piano melodies accompany two singers who mix international sounds with jazz, musicals, and iconic soundtracks, from stage and screen, while on Friday, two guitars and a vocalist take on pop, rock and R&B from around the world.

Later in the season comes the turn of jazz. By turns free-flowing and melodic, angular and challenging, but always open-minded and questioning, jazz goes to places other music doesn’t reach, or doesn’t dare to. The vision of the Rhodes and South Aegean International Jazz Festival strikes precisely this chord; making music a conduit for better communication between nations and cultures. At the end of October, go check out the incredible sounds and feel the overwhelming warmth of the whole endeavour, embracing new homegrown talent and world-renowned virtuosos alike. Musical innovation blends with poetry and educational forums, giving you plenty of chances to interact with the performers. The festival is gaining quite a reputation, in fact, as an arena for promoting democratic values and racial and gender equality. In recent years, it has spotlighted the woman’s voice and role in jazz and leapt into the whole jazz-meets-AI debate. As is typical of the music itself, the potential variations are limitless!

Shaping tomorrow

While sweet music wafts through the night air and you take another sip of wine, a truly cosmopolitan array of dishes set before you, your thoughts turn to the plan for tomorrow. The intriguingly, and appropriately, titled “Where the Day Startsevent would appear to be the ideal place to begin. A closer look reveals it to be a Biennale of Contemporary Ceramics, a large-scale exhibition held every two years. Essentially an island-hopping affair, it lets you get a handle on this ever-evolving art form and its host island, wherever that might be. Well, this year you’re in luck. It’s spending its summer on Rhodes, from 6th June all the way to 30th October! History, archaeology, mythology and culture come to life as you experience groundbreaking exhibits that all together make a wondrous ride for the imagination.

Not Nolan’s but an odyssey nonetheless

There you have it! A veritable odyssey; almost cinematic, you might say! Music, dance, art and crafts, the past and present rolled into one, elegant days in the sunshine, romantic nights at Il Parco beside the floodlit pool and gardens or stargazing in the Galaxy Roof Lounge Bar are all just one click away.
